Parc Dunant in Essen
The new district of Parc Dunant in Rüttenscheid is built in the heart of the city of Essen in Germany, near the beautiful Grugapark. With more than 300 apartments, it offers a modern urbanity with open spaces, meeting places and more private accommodation units. The residential project was designed by the Gentes group and aims to give a new identity to this part of the city.
ntk has developed signage objects that fit perfectly into the architecture: it follows its contours thanks to a folding system. The building numbers are suspended from the concrete walls of each entrance, or are attached to the glass facades. Longitudinal directional signs, designed in the shape of arrows, follow the walls to indicate even or odd numbers.
The ensemble is completed by four massive concrete stelae which present a plan of the district.
These tailor-made stelae are complex objects developed by our in-house design office. A calculation note was necessary so that each of the 600 kg concrete stelae rests in a stable manner on the fixing plates, and to accommodate the various elements that compose them. An anodized aluminum frame is named after the street in which the concrete block is placed; it stands out slightly from the concrete thanks to a powder-coated steel spacer slightly thinner than the frame, to create a play of light and shadow.
The site plan is integrated into this framework and presents the buildings in 3D. Panels of Dark HiMacs®, a mineral material combining acrylic, minerals and natural pigments, have been milled, polished, etched and filled with a white resin to create a contrast between the building's massing and the house numbers. The streets are materialized in anodized aluminum and the central points of the district are screen printed.
The orientation plans even remain visible at night: an LED strip has been hidden in the spacer to illuminate the stele from the inside.
The house and directional numbers follow the same logic and are detached from the concrete stele by means of a spacer, which serves to fix and support the anodized metal frame.
Careful assembly for both construction phases was carried out in cooperation with the company F&F Werbetechnik from Essen.
